I am not giving up anything: Lent means “returning,” not “giving up”

… my focus was wrong

For many, when Lent comes on Ash Wednesday, they should give up something in order to improve themselves spiritually.

Last year, I gave up Facebook for Lent, and it did me some good in that I had more peace of mind. However, that is not what Lent is supposed to mean.

As Father James Martin explains today, Lent should be a time of “returning.” While he is referring to a spiritual, many people still believe in giving up something — like I did with social media last year.

So, I am returning to the positive things in my life, trying to eliminate the negative ones — but not “giving things up.” One has to do with food, another with exercise, and another with spirituality.

So, I have changed my approach this year. I will cut back my social media some, but what I am going to do is return to the positive aspects of my life that have disappeared.

Example 1: Returning to daily doses of Oatmeal

This one seems simple, but it is not. I have not been eating oatmeal daily as I did for about 30+ years. I still eat it, but I have been relying more on Cream of Wheat and eggs.

Cream of Wheat is good for you, but not as good as oatmeal. Oatmeal has these advantages,

You'll benefit from important vitamins, minerals, and protein;

The fiber content may help you lose weight;

You'll help improve cholesterol levels, and regulate your blood sugar.

Here is one explanation

How is oatmeal so valuable? Let me count the ways,

Oatmeal provides a mix of important nutrients, such as magnesium, zinc, and iron, plus it's naturally gluten-free. Magnesium is important for heart and brain health, while zinc aids our immune system, and iron boosts energy (via Purity Products).

You might be surprised to learn a half cup cup of oatmeal actually has the same amount of protein as one large egg (via Self), and there are endless ways to increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding nuts, protein powder, nut butters, or milk (via Nutritious Life). If you want an even bigger boost of protein, you can mix an egg into your oatmeal. Just finished a hard workout? Oatmeal is also one of the best ways to replenish muscles and refuel your body, according to the Food Network.

So, I am cutting back on eggs and bread, not giving them up, but increasing my amount of oats.

That is my first step in my “returning to my previous self.”
